There always comes a time when you have more things than you know what to do with. When this happens, one of your best options is to acquire self storage; especially if you are moving to a new home. But while self storage is simple and easy to use for moving, there are still some things to consider awhile down the road. Want to keep from rushing and stressing on moving day? Take a look at the following self storage schedule.
One or More Months Before the Move
A month or two before you move, you will want to start taking a look at your things. There are always some possessions that you do not want to keep at all; now is the time to find new homes for them. Look into planning a yard sale to sell anything that you do not want to move or place in self storage. Take time to sort carefully through your possessions... and be ruthless about it if you can. You do not want unnecessary items filling up the limited space in your self storage unit.
Two Weeks Before the Move
About two weeks before moving day, the things you own should be sorted and, if necessary, sold. Now you have to focus on the administrative side of the move. First, you will need to look into a moving company to move your things, and a self storage company to store whatever you cannot move. In many cases, you can combine these two chores by using a portable self storage company, which can both move and store your possessions. With portable self storage, you can also arrange for the unit further ahead of your move.
When looking at self storage companies, be sure to do your research carefully and choose the best one for you. When you flip through the Yellow Pages, you are sure to find hundreds of companies that might work for you. Look over their policies to be sure they offer the appropriate combination of security, insurance, climate control, etc., for your possessions.
One Week Ahead
At this point, your possessions should be sorted into "store" and "move" piles. Now it is time to get all of these items organized. If using portable self storage for the move (or simply for storage), you can place the items in the storage unit at your leisure, leaving plenty of space in your home for packing and sorting. If, on the other hand, you have decided on regular movers and traditional self storage, it is a good idea to reserve a place in your home to temporarily store items for self storage.
If you use portable self storage, the day of the move should be relatively stress free. You just place a phone call, put your family in the car, and drive to your new home. If using traditional moving or storage methods, however, be sure to leave plenty of time to load, unload, and organize. Chances are, you will need the extra time.
